From Steve Doell of Crime Victims United of Oregon

Dear Friends,

Please urge all Oregon Republican House members to vote NO on Senate Bill 1008 by no later than Thursday, May 23.

In an attempt to over-ride two sweeping votes of the people, first in 1994 by a 2 to 1 statewide vote, then by a 3 to 1 margin in 2000, voters passed, then reaffirmed Ballot Measure 11, which called for truth in sentencing and required older teenagers to face adult trials for the most serious forms of homicide, rape, kidnapping and robbery.

The law has been used sparingly by the state's prosecutors, and has resulted in dramatic reduction in serious violent crime by older teenagers. SB 1008 would completely abolish the juvenile crime provisions of Measure 11, meaning that the clock would be spun back to the 1970s, 80s and early 90s when a 17-year old accused of their second rape or even murder, would almost certainly never face a jury in adult court. If passed, SB 1008 would effectively wipe all record of the most violent and heinous crimes from the records, forever.

Thank you.
